Acupuncture FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Fertility, Women’s Health, and Acupuncture

What types of women’s health problems can be treated with acupuncture?

  • Infertility, including polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometrioses, premature ovarian failure, high FSH and short luteal phase. While acupuncture does not necessarily “cure” these problems, it supports your body to become pregnant in spite of them.
  • Premenstrual syndrome, including mood swings and bloating
  • Menopause symptoms including hot flashes and insomnia
  • Painful or irregular period

Can you treat more than one problem at a time?

Absolutely, because acupuncture and other strategies of Traditional Chinese Medicine are holistic by nature and design. Just one acupuncture point can be used to address a number of symptoms. And if you are being treated for hot flashes or infertility, I can also treat your joint pain or IBS

How can acupuncture help infertility?

Acupuncture and other strategies of Traditional Chinese Medicine can:

  • Regulate the menstrual cycle,
  • Encourage ovulation
  • Increase the production of fertile mucous
  • Prepare the uterine lining for pregnancy

Can acupuncture help male factor infertility?

Yes, acupuncture can help certain types of male infertility. In combination with lifestyle and nutrition counseling, men have been able to enhance their sperm count and motility. There is very interesting research to support this.

What is an acupuncture treatment like?

It is very relaxing. It is relatively painless because the sterile , disposable needles are very tiny. About 10 to 12 needles are inserted per treatment in areas on the arms, legs, and ears.

How long does a treatment take?

The needles are in for 20 to 30 minutes, but the appointment time is about one hour as visits often include nutrition counseling and education.

How should I prepare on my appointment day?

Please be sure to wear or bring comfortable clothing — sleeves and pants that can be rolled up work well. Do not skip any meals on the day of your appointment, as acupuncture can make you very relaxed, and you may get too relaxed if you have not eaten.

How many treatments will I need?

This question can only be answered after a complete assessment by Jane Gleeson is done to find out your history and health challenges from an Eastern and Western perspective. A course of treatments often involves once per week treatments for 3 to 6 months.

What are the fees for acupuncture?

Jane Gleeson’s fees are in line with other local practitioners and medical centers, and she tries to do the best work she can within your budget.

Does Insurance cover the treatments?

Many insurance companies do not cover acupuncture treatment for infertility, but they may cover treatment for endometrioses, amenorrhea, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and other causes of infertility. Most “Flexible Spending and Health Savings” accounts can be used for acupuncture treatments for any diagnosis.
