Natural Conception & IVF

Acupuncture and Natural Conception

Acupuncture enhances fertility for couples hoping to conceive naturally and for couples going through IVF or other assisted reproductive technology. With natural conception, acupuncture may work by increasing blood flow to the uterus and by regulating a woman’s menstrual cycle and the hormones responsible for ovulation.

When I work with couples trying to conceive naturally, I talk with couples about the best ways to identify and target the most fertile time of the month for intercourse (I have expertise in Natural Family Planning). We talk about ways to enhance sperm and egg quality through diet and lifestyle. Although most couples have a good knowledge base in these areas, couples almost always learn something new about fertility after our sessions.

Hi Jane,
I want to let you know how much I appreciated all of your help with acupuncture and my pregnancy. I cannot tell you how much it meant to me to become pregnant on our own. After all of this time it actually happened and it helped me believe that the path I have been taking is true to my instincts. It has helped me believe in myself in ways I didn’t think was possible. I feel more at peace with the mind body connection and I am so grateful for your help and guidance. Your help was truly appreciated and I want you to know how much it meant to me. ~S. A.

Acupuncture and In Vitro Fertilization and other Assisted Reproductive Technology

Because of my extensive background in Western medicine and Nursing, I am very knowledgeable about the medications, protocols, and procedures used in IVF, IUI, and other assisted reproductive technology. I have also worked with couples who are using a surrogate mother, donor sperm, and donor eggs. Because of my extensive background in Western medicine, I am very familiar with the various protocols and hormone regimens for couples undergoing assisted reproductive procedures including transfer of preserved embryos.

For couples undergoing IVF, IUI’s and taking Clomid, acupuncture treatments are designed to work with the Western protocols and medications that are a part of these interventions. Acupuncture enhances fertility with assisted reproductive technology by increasing blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, potentially increasing egg quality and quantity. Research shows that IVF success rates are higher for women who have acupuncture while going through IVF. In addition to this, acupuncture can help relieve some of the side effects of the hormones that must be taken while undergoing IVF.

Dear Jane,
I wanted to write and tell you our wonderful news. The in vitro took and we are pregnant. It may even be twins based on our VERY high initial HCG levels. I cannot even tell you how much Steve and I appreciate what you have done for us. We are certain beyond a doubt that acupuncture was the difference for us… One might think that after so many failed IVF cycles that we were just simply due for some good luck. But with the definitive difference this cycle in my egg maturation, fertilization, and very strong HCG and progesterone levels there is only one thing to attribute it to — acupuncture.

We will forever be grateful to Jane.
With warmth and gratitude,
L.J.

Acupuncture and Male Infertility or Subfertility

In the case of male infertility or subfertility, acupuncture and herbs have resulted in an increase of sperm quantity and quality. Since about 40% of the time, both the man and woman have some fertility challenges, Jane also treats male factor infertility.

In addition to acupuncture, my nutrition counseling for both partners will help a couple become healthier, more balanced, and more fertile. I teach all couples Mindfulness Meditation which will help reduce the stress sometimes associated with daily life and with trying to conceive. It is a known fact that a hormone called cortisol is released during stress, and cortisol binds with “estrogen” receptors in the body, preventing the estrogen from going to the reproductive organs. But the good news is that meditation is a great solution.

A Word from Jane

My acupuncture practice is evenly divided between patients who are seeking to use acupuncture to help conceive naturally and those who are going through IVF and other assisted reproductive procedures.

I try to support couples emotionally by listening to their concerns and “being there” for them during what can be an emotional roller coaster. I am in the unique position of getting feedback from patients who are also receiving Western treatment at several different fertility centers throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. I am always happy to share information and feedback that I have learned about the various centers.

Fertility treatments can be a financial stressor for couples. I try to design an acupuncture treatment plan that is within their budget so that money will not be an obstacle to becoming pregnant.
